Question:
Does anyone see any potential regarding the Millertown mining operation.
Will this be a feasible bonanza, will it turn into a money pit or worse will
it be another gift to the gods in Ottawa.
Answer:
One thing that concerns me however is the port from which the
product will be shipped. Botwood is the closer of several possible
ports but it does not have the infrastructure necessary for such an
operation. The mayor of Botwood is on record as saying that he
hopes the provincial government will come forward with the
resources to build that infrastructure. I'm wondering what is
happening to the free enterprise system when the first thought of
officials who want an industrial base in their area is government help.
I think that if shipping copper ore out of Botwood would be a
lucrative enterprise and could fairly compete with other ports
there has to be private investors out there who are interested. If
there is not I disagree with putting the taxpayer on the hook to
build the necessary port facilities when they already exist in
other ports, such as Corner Brook.
There is potential ,but this darn elected govt. has to some how get a
smelter on the go . Look what was given away in the way of copper at Voiseys
Bay .Put allthis together and you have something . Go another step star
making something pipe ,sheet copper Thats where allthe money is ,but we
can`t get that thru our thick heads.
I agree and that's the second thing about this operation that
concerns me. The intention apparently is to ship the raw ore
somewhere else for processing into copper and eventually into
usable product.
Yes the ore should be smelted near where it is mined. I disagree
however that it should be the government (taxpayers) who get that
smelter on the go. That I think, like the shipping of the ore, is
a job for private enterprise.
Mining, smelting and manufacturing are not jobs the government
should be involved in. What government should be doing is creating
the atmosphere that will attract private enterprise.
